Cultural Diplomacy and Self-Organized Solidarity Movements

Time: June 3, 2016, Friday 11:00 - 17:00; June 4, Saturday 11:00 - 15:00

Venue: Mayakovsky 102, the open office of tranzit. hu, 1068 Budapest, Király utca 102.

The seminar Cultural Diplomacy and Self-Organized Solidarity Movements will be led Kristine Khouri and Rasha Salti (curators, Beirut), with contributions from Bojana Piškur (curator, Moderna Galerija, Ljubljana), invited local researchers, and the participants.

Discussions will explore the following questions: How did cultural events function as diplomatic tools? How were cultural actors related to solidarity movements and what regime of relationships (whether official or not) was possible between artists and cultural protagonists in different countries of the Eastern Bloc? The seminar will also discuss the complicated and sometimes turbulent history of the confluence of international solidarity, progressive leftist dissent, and neo-avant-garde artistic practice. We will take also into consideration the methodological questions of exhibition-history research and archival/documentary exhibitions presenting research outcomes.
